From Homelessness to Hope: Ashley’s Story
When Dr. Ashley Allen talks about homelessness, she doesn’t picture a stranger on a street corner. She remembers her own family — a mother working around the clock, children doing their best to stay afloat, and a system that made stability feel out of reach.
At just nine years old, Ashley’s life turned upside down when her father lost his job and went to prison. Her mom’s income couldn’t keep pace with rising costs, and soon the family was evicted. From shelters to relatives’ couches to hotel rooms, Ashley’s childhood was defined by constant movement and a determination to make life different.
That determination became her strength. College wasn’t just a chance at a degree. It was her first experience of stability, a roof she could count on. And from that point forward, she never stopped building toward something more.
Today, Dr. Allen’s lived experience fuels her leadership. As a member of the CFTH Board of Directors, she helps guide the End Street Homelessness Action Plan, which housed more than 200 people from downtown Houston in just nine months. She also leads the Houston Community Land Trust, expanding pathways to affordable homeownership.
Ashley’s story is a reminder that homelessness doesn’t always look like what you think, and that change happens when lived experience leads the way.
